Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
International organizations, particularly the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), play an instrumental role in promoting democratic governance and political representation in developing regions. In Gusau LGA, Zamfara State, the UNDP has been actively involved in various programs aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting the participation of marginalized groups in the political process. Through initiatives such as civic education campaigns, voter registration drives, and the support of local governance structures, international organizations contribute to the creation of a more inclusive political environment. The collaboration between international agencies and local governments has been essential in bridging the gap between the electorate and elected officials, fostering transparency, and enhancing political representation (Tunde & Okeke, 2024). This study evaluates the role of international organizations, specifically UNDP programs, in improving political representation in Gusau LGA.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the positive impact of international organizations in promoting political participation, there are persistent challenges in Gusau LGA. Political representation remains skewed, and marginalized communities continue to face barriers in accessing political platforms and resources. While UNDP initiatives have provided some improvements, the extent of their success in changing the political landscape and increasing the inclusivity of governance in Gusau LGA is still unclear. This study aims to evaluate the role of international organizations, focusing on UNDP programs, in promoting political representation and addressing challenges in local governance.
